How to protect yourself from Venmo, Zelle and Cash App scams

Imagine walking down the sidewalk and a scammer pulls a gun on you.

Open a payment app on your phone and transfer your hard-earned cash, or take a bullet to the head.

This is one of the real-life phone cash rip-off scenarios that happens to many people in America.

Other Cash App crimes have also occurred due to vulnerabilities in iPhones that were unlocked without iOS’s new stolen device protection enabled.

These are examples of how mobile payment apps can put your money and lives at risk.

Do you use mobile payment apps like Venmo, Zelle, or Cash App to send and receive? If so, you’re not alone. These peer-to-peer payment services currently process an estimated $1 trillion in payments.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said that with so much money involved, there is now a lot of fraud and fraud going on. He says these apps are exposing many people to scammers and thieves, causing them to lose large amounts of their hard-earned cash.

In response, Mr. Bragg wrote to the companies that own these apps, demanding that they improve their security and protect users from fraud and theft.

His specific requests include placing limits on transactions, requiring up to one day of secondary authentication, and better monitoring for anomalous activity. He said he is requesting a meeting with companies to discuss these issues.

How unlocked devices can lead to financial disaster and personal harm

Bragg’s letter describes how these financial apps allow criminals to gain access to unlocked devices and exploit them for financial gain or identity theft. He states the following:

“These crimes involve unauthorized users gaining access to unlocked devices, withdrawing large amounts of money from bank accounts, making purchases on mobile financial applications, and using financial information from the applications to open new accounts. This includes opening.

“Criminals also take over your phone’s security by changing passwords, recovery accounts, and application settings. , many individuals are motivated to commit these crimes, causing severe economic and, in some cases, physical harm to residents.”

What are the problems with mobile payment apps?

Bragg said he has seen numerous cases of people losing money and having their personal information stolen by using these apps. He said this is happening because of the way these apps work on phones and tablets. Here are three ways a scammer uses these apps to scam or steal from you.

1) Phishing: This is when someone pretends to be someone else and sends you a message or email asking you to send money or provide account details. For example, you may receive a message from someone who is a friend, family member, or charity and is in urgent need of help. Or you may receive an email from someone claiming to be from your bank, the IRS, or a mobile payment app asking you to verify your account or update your information.

2) Spoofing: This is when someone creates a fake profile or account that looks real and tries to trick you into sending money or accepting payments. For example, you might receive a payment request from someone who is selling something online, but whose name, photo, or username is slightly different from the actual seller. Or you may receive payment from someone who claims to be the buyer but is actually using a fake check or stolen credit card.

3) Device theft: This is when someone takes your phone or tablet and uses your mobile payment app to take your money or make purchases without your permission. For example, someone could grab your phone while you’re using it in public, or break into your car or home and take your device. Or someone could request to use your phone for a legitimate reason and then use that phone to access a mobile payment app behind your back.

How can I protect myself from mobile payment fraud?

Mobile payment apps have some security features to protect their users, but they are not enough and should not be relied on alone. You should also do these 10 things:

1) You should always access the payment app through the official app or website. Not from any third party platform or service.

2) Check security settings Make sure all settings provided by your payment app are set to the highest and most secure settings.

3) You should create a strong, unique, and complex password. Change it for each mobile payment app and change it often. Consider using a password manager to generate and store complex passwords.

4) Enable two-factor authenticationThis means you must enter a code or use your fingerprint or face to unlock your account to prevent unauthorized access. This way, even if someone knows your password, they can’t log in without your device or confirmation.

5) Lock your device and log out of the app. You should always lock your phone using a password, PIN, pattern, fingerprint, or face. Do not share your password, PIN, or security code with anyone. You should also log out and turn off the auto-login feature every time you use a mobile payment app. This way, even if someone steals or borrows your device, they won’t be able to access your mobile payment app without your authorization.

6) Verify the identity and legitimacy of the sender or recipient. Please be sure to verify the name, photo, username, and contact information of the person or entity you are sending money to or receiving money from before approving or submitting a payment request. You should also confirm the reason and amount of the transaction before agreeing. If you are unsure or have questions, you should contact the person or organization directly by another method, such as by phone, text, or email. However, only if you are certain that these forms of communication are legitimate. Never send money or give your account details to anyone you don’t know, trust, or who asks for money out of the blue.

7) Link your Venmo, Cash App, or PayPal account to your credit card In contrast to debit cards, you can more easily dispute charges from fraudsters. Zelle does not accept credit card payments. However, keep in mind that while linking your credit card to a payment app provides additional protection in case of fraud, it can also incur additional costs in the form of transaction fees.

8) Avoid leaving balances on money transfer apps. When it comes to fraud, your bank or credit card company is much more likely to be able to help you than a money transfer app.

9) Never click on links from unknown sources. This is especially true if the email or text appears to have come from a payment app. Run antivirus software on your device to protect yourself from accidentally clicking on malicious links. Get my pick of the best antivirus software here.

10) Monitor account activity and report suspicious or unauthorized transactions. You should set up text or email notifications from your payment app or bank and check your account activity regularly. Look for signs of fraud, such as unpaid or unreceived payments or changes to account settings or information.
