God’s Own Country (Francis Lee, 2017), 1:50am, Film 4
Frances Lee’s muddy country love story is a movie that could have been made with a little more conviction than Brokeback Mountain. Josh O’Connor plays Johnny, a grumpy young man who struggles on a “shithole” sheep farm in Yorkshire with his elderly nan and his stroke-stricken father. Then Gheorghe (Alec Secareanu), a Romanian hired during the lambing season, arrives, and his patience and kindness bring out Johnny’s latent good qualities. In the solitude and harshness of the farm life, something beautiful emerges. Simon Wardell
