The defending champion Kansas City Chiefs have had slightly more success in Super Bowl appearances in their traditional red jerseys than in their white jerseys throughout franchise history.
The Chiefs won three Vince Lombardi trophies. The team holds his 2-1 record in Super Bowls wearing the red jersey, with wins over the Vikings in Super Bowl IV and the San Francisco 49ers in Super LIV. Kansas City lost to Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV while wearing red jerseys.
Last year, the Chiefs wore white jerseys and defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl. Kansas City has chosen to wear red jerseys for next week’s game in Las Vegas.

The Chiefs’ victory in Super Bowl LVII marked the 16th time in the last 19 Super Bowls that the team won wearing white jerseys.

The designated home team will be given first choice of jersey. The Eagles were designated the home team last year and decided to wear their traditional green jerseys.
The NFC and AFC alternate home conferences, so the Chiefs were scheduled to be the designated home team for this year’s game. The team chose red jerseys.

Meanwhile, the 49ers will wear white jerseys next Sunday. The Niners franchise has already won five Super Bowl trophies, but the team’s last championship happened 29 years ago. But history will be on the team’s side heading into this year’s Super Bowl, at least when it comes to jersey trends.
The Buccaneers made the somewhat surprising decision to wear white jerseys for the Super Bowl against the Chiefs in February 2020, despite being the first team in NFL history to play a big game in their home stadium.

Besides the Chiefs, the only teams to have won the last 19 Super Bowls wearing their home jerseys are the 2011 Green Bay Packers and 2018 Eagles.
