MOBILE, Ala. — Defensive coordinator remains the biggest vacancy on Brian Daboll’s coaching staff after the sudden departure of Wink Martindale.
The vacancy should be filled within a few days.
“Daveth is working on that right now,” general manager Joe Schon said from the Senior Bowl Tuesday morning. “We hope to have some resolution for the defensive coordinator position by the end of the week. There were many excellent candidates that the Dabes interviewed and we are excited about some of the finalists.”
The Giants are believed to have narrowed the list of candidates they negotiated to three.
Ravens defensive backs coach Denard Wilson interviewed Daboll twice.
Other candidates include Chiefs linebackers coach Brendan Daley, Dolphins linebackers coach Anthony Campanile and Giants defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson.
Former NFL defensive coordinators Shane Bowen (Titans) and Derrick Ansley (Chargers) also met with Daboll.
The Giants also interviewed Bills LB coach Bobby Babic, who was promoted to defensive coordinator with the Bills on Tuesday.
If Ejiro Ebello is released from his contract with the Panthers, he could be another option for the Giants.
The Giants wanted to play Evero, but the Panthers blocked what could have been a lateral move.
Once Evero becomes available, he will have several suitors.
He has also met twice with Seattle officials and remains in the running for the Seahawks’ head coaching job.
Schoen said the players on the roster he assembled were not chosen entirely for Martindale’s system and could be adjusted if the new coordinator wanted to make significant changes to the defense.
“Depending on our size, we can go 4-on-3 or 3-on-4,” Schoen said. “We drafted it that way so we weren’t locked into one particular scheme. Where our guys are on defense now, whether it’s a 4-3 or a 3-4, I think we can go out and play.”
