Shea Tierney gives glimpse of Giants’ future at Senior Bowl

MOBILE, Ala. — So what does Shea Tierney’s offense look like?

The Giants’ young quarterback coach smiled.

“I’m just trying to give them enough stuff that they can go forward and function and give them an advantage, but not too much that they get bogged down with.” said Tierney.

“These guys” are all the players who will be part of the varsity offense at the Senior Bowl. Tierney is the team’s offensive coordinator during practice this week and Saturday’s game at Hancock-Whitney Stadium on the campus of the University of South Alabama.

It’s a temporary promotion for the 37-year-old, who coaches in a position where upward mobility is often a fast track to promotion.

The franchise’s internal depth isn’t just limited to its roster.

Brian Daboll had never been a head coach at any level when he assembled his first staff in 2022. He had never worked with any of the three coordinators he hired before, so it wasn’t a friends and family reunion.

He filled two key position coaching roles with the former Bills, where Daboll was the offensive coordinator. One of them, offensive line coach Bobby Johnson, didn’t work out and was fired after two seasons.

Tierney has been Daboll’s trusted assistant, playing a role in Josh Allen’s development in Buffalo and helping Daniel Jones excel in their first year together.

Tierney also deserves credit for Tommy DeVito’s rise last season from an undrafted rookie to a player who can win three straight games as a starter while making minimal mistakes along the way.

On Tuesday, Tierney, wearing Giants blue coaching gear, expanded his horizons, making plays for quarterbacks Bo Nix, Michael Penix and Sam Hartman, as well as wide receivers, running backs, tight ends and the offensive line. Mann also made adjustments.

After one successful one-on-one period, Tierney took a solid route and made a sure-fire catch on USC receiver Brenden Rice.

All of this should benefit the Giants. Tierney’s extensive time with all of these prospects is sure to pay off in the coming weeks as the Giants’ draft committee finalizes.

“I think it helps us at every position,” Tierney told the Post. “I get to fly around to every position, which is something I’ve never done before. In fact, when I come back, of course I can talk about linemen, receivers, running backs, quarterbacks. Because , because you’re with them too. It really helps you get a good baseline for all of these guys in everything. We’re going to be targeting 250 to 300 people over the next two months, but Let’s take a look [at the Senior Bowl] In 130 of them. ”

Nix, an Oregon native and Penix, who passed Washington to reach the national championship game before the Huskies lost to Michigan, could become a late first-round pick in the NFL Draft or maybe even go as far as the second round. do not have.

The Giants have studied both of these quarterbacks, and Tierney was able to get to know them better this week.

Tierney’s head coach on the national team is Jets defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich.

Working within a mixed coaching staff will also be good for Tierney’s career. This is because Tierney comes into contact with assistants that he knows peripherally or does not know at all.

“It’s fun,” he said. “It’s a good experience.” “It’s a mixed staff, as everyone knows, and it’s really great.” You meet new guys, you talk to them, you get something from them, you give them your own interpretation as well.” It was cool and fun to go out and do it for a week and see how it turned out.”

Mike Kafka will return as the Giants’ offensive coordinator, as the Seahawks have decided to hire Ravens defensive coordinator Mike McDonald as their head coach.

Had Kafka, who interviewed with the Seahawks after parting ways with Pete Carroll, left, Tierney might have been in line to become the next offensive coordinator.

Of course, Tierney wants to evolve from his role as a quarterbacks coach, and the experience he receives this week gives him a little taste of life as a coordinator.

“My goal is just to help the Giants do whatever it takes to win,” Tierney said. “Those things happen all the time, but I don’t focus too much on them. I’m just trying to come out here and help the players do their best job and if that’s going to happen one way or another. If it helps me get better, I think that’s a good thing.

“It helps me move forward in terms of my own personal growth. And I think that’s the most important thing, moving on from there. All the other things, when the Giants are doing well, , and it happens when we’re doing well as an organization, and that’s really the focus for me.”
