Target pulls Civil Rights activity kit containing errors about Black leaders

(NEXSTAR) – Target has removed civil rights-themed products from its shelves after TikTok users pointed out several inaccuracies regarding black leaders depicted within the products.

The product was a children’s activity kit published by Bendon and marketed as “Civil Rights Magnetic Learning Activities” that included magnets featuring illustrations of prominent leaders of the civil rights movement. The woman, who identified herself as an American history teacher, said she “noticed some discrepancies” immediately after opening the kit.

She then pointed to three magnets with illustrations of WEB Du Bois, Booker T. Washington, and Carter G. Woodson, each of which had been misidentified by the kit’s publisher. She also juxtaposed the kit illustrations with photos of Du Bois, Washington, and Woodson that she pulled up on her computer.

The video, shared by @IssaTete earlier this week, has since been viewed over 800,000 times.

Target confirmed in a statement obtained by Nexstar that sales of the book have been discontinued.

“This item is no longer available for sale in-store or online. We have also confirmed that the product’s publisher is aware of the error,” a store spokesperson said in an emailed statement. mentioned in.
