Former President Trump on Sunday harshly criticized California Gov. Gavin Newsom (Democrat), insisting he would be “very bullish” when asked how he would face the governor in a hypothetical presidential race.
“Sunday Morning Futures” host Maria Bartiromo said in an interview with President Trump that aired on Sunday that she thinks the former president might not face President Biden in the general election. and asked who he could face in his place.
President Trump said, “Really? [doesn’t] I know,” Balitromo suggested of Newsom, asking how the former president would perform against him.
“I’ll tell you…what is he?” [Newsom] There are so many bulls—” Trump said. “He wants to say how great…he’s doing terrible things. His condition is terrible. We look at homelessness and people leaving their homes. Some businesses are leaving. They’re all going to go elsewhere.”
The former president added that Newsom is “easy” because “California is in dire straits.”
“He was a terrible governor,” Trump continued.
The Hill has reached out to Newsom’s office for comment.
Newsom has repeatedly denied ongoing speculation that he would run for the White House in 2024, and last month claimed he would “go to the ends of the earth” for Biden.
Mr. Newsom is expected to struggle in Mr. Biden’s re-election campaign in Nevada and California.
California’s governor has not held back from speaking out about Trump, calling the former president “damaged goods” last week.
“He’s unbeatable in the primary, but when it comes to the general election, the general election, he’s the most flawed candidate I’ve seen in my lifetime,” Newsom said. in an interview he later added, along with MSNBC’s Alex Wagner. “He’s not as funny as he used to be. He’s even less free than he used to be, more extreme, and definitely more dangerous on all issues.”
