At Least 28 Dead in Russian-Occupied Ukraine as Shelling Hits Bakery

(AP) – Authorities in Moscow say Ukrainian military shelling has killed at least 28 people at a bakery in the Russian-occupied city of Liszchansk.

Local leader Leonid Pasiechnik said in a statement on Telegram on Saturday that at least one child was among the dead. A further 10 people were rescued from under the rubble by emergency services, he said.

Ukrainian officials in Kiev did not comment on the incident.

Both Moscow and Kiev have increased their reliance on long-range strikes this winter, with positions along a 1,500-kilometre (930-mile) front largely unchanged in the nearly two-year war.

However, the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said in a statement on Sunday that Ukrainian forces have carried out sustained attacks along the front lines over the past 24 hours and are under intense Russian attack.

Fighting has been especially intense in the eastern city of Avdiivka, where Russian forces are trying to encircle Kiev forces, while Ukrainian forces also continue to defend Kupiansk, Lyman, Bakhmut and Zaporizhia, officials said.

The military junta in Ukraine’s Sumy region announced on Sunday that Russian troops had shelled the region in 16 separate rounds the previous day, opening fire on the border areas of Yunakivka, Villopilya, Krasnopilya, Velika Pisarivka and Esman.
