Rapper Killer Mike Detained by Police at the Grammy Awards After Collecting 3 Trophies

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Rapper Killer Mike was detained at Sunday’s Grammy Awards ceremony after winning three Grammy Awards, including his first win in more than 20 years.

In the video, after having a good time at Sunday’s Grammy Awards premiere, where he won three awards in quick succession, Mike is seen being led away in handcuffs by Los Angeles police at Crypto Arena.

A police spokesperson declined to provide his name or further details, but confirmed a black man was in custody.

Representatives for Mike did not immediately respond to requests for comment via email or text.

“The only thing that limits your age is not telling the truth about your age or what you do,” Mike, 48, said backstage. He won Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song, and Best Rap Album.

“When I was 20, I thought it would be cool to be a drug dealer,” he says. “At 40, I started living with regret and what I had done. At 45, I started rapping about it. Now, at 48, I started living with regret and what I had done. I stand here as a man filled with empathy and compassion for what he has done.”

Mike’s first award came after he won Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for “Scientists & Engineers.” The single features Andre 3000, Future, and Erin Allen Cain.

He won Best Rap Album for “Michael.”

Upon accepting his third award, the Atlanta-based rapper said, “Sweep! Atlanta, sweep!”

“To all you guys out there who think you’re too old to rap, bullshit,” he said during a pre-TV broadcast.

He doesn’t care, he said, using an expletive, “If you’re 78 and rapping about how many girls you had in a nursing home, keep hip-hop alive.”
