Indiana Republican Rep. Victoria Spartz to run for re-election, reversing 2023 decision

Congresswoman Victoria Spartz (R-Indiana) has announced that she will run for re-election this year, reversing her plan to retire in 2023.

Spartz said last February that he did not seek re-election and planned to spend more time with his family. The two-term lawmaker explained his decision in a statement Monday.

“Looking at where we are today, and at the urging of many of my constituents, the current failed leadership in Washington, D.C., does not allow us to address the issues important to this country that I have worked so hard to address in this Congress. I don’t think I can give a speech.’ Good luck,” Spartz said.

“As someone who grew up under oppression, I understand the importance of this difficult time for our republic, and I am honored to continue to fight for my fellow Hoosiers and, God willing, for them. ” Spartz said in a statement.

The announcement puts a damper on the campaign plans of nine Republicans who have filed to run for her seat. Spartz narrowly missed Indiana’s filing deadline, which requires candidates to submit their documents by Friday.

No Democratic lawmaker had filed a motion to contest the seat.

Despite the announcement, three other Republican-held seats in Indiana will change hands by Election Day. Congressman Larry Buchshon and Congressman Greg Pence announced last month that they would not run for re-election.
