Country music icon Toby Keith passed away on Monday after a battle with stomach cancer, his team announced on social media. He was 62 years old.
“Toby Keith passed away peacefully last night, February 5th, surrounded by his family,” the statement read.
“He fought with grace and courage. Please respect his family’s privacy at this time.”
The “Should Have Been a Cowboy” singer first announced his diagnosis in June 2022, after already undergoing extensive treatment.
“I’ve been undergoing chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery for the past six months. So far, it’s going very well,” he said at the time.
“You need time to breathe, recover and relax.”

Just six months later, Keith said his battle with the disease had been “pretty debilitating” but he was trying to get back to “fighting shape.”
He seems to have turned a corner, as he said in June 2023, “I feel pretty good.” But he remained concerned about his prognosis.
“Basically, everything is trending really well,” he said. told The Oklahoman,”[but] You never know when cancer will strike, so you have to be prepared. ”
