Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas survived a House vote to impeach him from his position and office.

On Tuesday, the Republican-led House failed to pass a resolution to remove Mayorkas from office. Republicans claimed he was involved in high-level criminality and other wrongdoing during his tenure while managing the border crisis.
The final vote was 214-216.
Republicans hold a slim majority in the House. So Republicans needed only three votes to oust Mr. Mayorkas in order to sway the final result in their favor.
When the dramatic voting first ended, the vote was tied 215-215. However, if there is a tie vote in the House, the resolution will not be passed. Additionally, one more Republican flipped his vote before the results were announced.
The three Republicans who voted against Mayorkas’ impeachment were Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.), Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.), and Rep. Tom McClintock (R-Calif.). ), and Congressman Blake Moore (R-Utah). “No” to allow members of his party to raise the vote again.
Had Republicans succeeded in passing the resolution, Mayorkas would have become the second cabinet member in U.S. history to be impeached. The last successful impeachment was 148 years ago.
It is also important to note that there were three Republican vacancies at the time of the vote. These vacancies are due to the retirements of Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), Bill Johnson (RN.C.), and the ouster of George Santos (RN.Y.).
Also absent was House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-Louisiana). He is currently recovering from a stem cell transplant to help treat multiple myeloma.
