Align interview: Pro-life comedian Nicholas De Santo

You are reading the pro-life issue of Align. Our perspective on different people and perspectives in the anti-abortion movement. Please also see our dispatch OneLife LA andMarch for Life. March for Life Preparation Guide for College Students. Interviews with comedian JP Sears and skyscraper activist Maison Deschamps. Robin Atkins talks about how to talk to pro-choice advocates. And Kevin Ryan talked about the brutal culling of people with Down syndrome through abortion.

Italian-Iranian comedian Nicolas De Santo, with his expressive face and thick accent, looks a bit like a young Roberto Benigni. But once he starts telling jokes, the similarities end. “There are many women who kill their babies for their careers. Can you imagine killing your baby for your career and still being paid 30% less than men?” A comedy set in a Nazi concentration camp. configuring it is another thing. It’s quite another to joke about a woman’s sacred “right to choose.”

DeSanto’s intuition that there was room for right-wing voices in the British comedy scene proved correct. After experimenting with anti-abortion jokes in Reading, De Santo brought the routine to London in January 2023, where it rocked out with an audience at the Backyard Comedy Club.Descente I have uploaded the set It will be on YouTube in April. It recently surpassed 1 million views.

De Santo recently spoke with Aline about “Punchdown,” conservatism as a counterculture, and the future of comedy. This interview has been edited for clarity.

Alignment: I’m not going to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet. Because I think people should just watch it. But history loops, and that’s a very…sensitive part of history. you make it interesting. I think even pro-choice people will listen to it.

nicolas de santo: Obviously you want to speak and speak to your own crowd and your own tribe. Because these are the people who agree with you and are on the same side in this so-called culture war. This is very realistic. , I’m sure you’ll agree.

But the best comments and the best compliments I get are from people on YouTube. For example, this one has now been viewed over a million times. Come and say, “Yes, I don’t agree with everything you say, or I don’t agree with what you say, but I still thought it was interesting, or I still thought it was thought-provoking.” people. Still, there were some good points.

And first of all, since it claims to be a comedy, it has to remain a comedy. So it has to be interesting. And it’s hard to make such a highly divisive, controversial, and also tough topic funny. That is the main point and the main challenge. But of course, the second challenge is that you want to convert. You want to make others think. And that’s the ultimate goal apart from making people laugh. It’s about being socially useful, doing something for this goodwill. What better cause than to protect the most defenseless of creatures: the unborn child?

Like many Westerners from outside the Western world, I was very disappointed and disappointed to see that the West no longer had the will or confidence to physically protect themselves. And you’re looking at the southern border of the United States and the border of Europe. Borders cross borders at the same time, but in terms of values, we also cross borders spiritually.

Alignment: You offer some great rebuttals to arguments that don’t really get refuted often. They will remain as they are.

Descente: You mentioned history earlier. I’m a bit of a history buff. I have always loved history. And of course, I’m based in Europe, born in Italy and lived in Germany. I am now a naturalized British citizen. And of course, history and World War II are deeply present.

And today, anyone who says this Hitler label, this Nazi label, the election, Trump, or anything that the left, Democrats, liberals don’t like, automatically becomes Hitler. That is, these labels are sometimes historical labels like Hitler or Nazi, sometimes other labels like bigot or other, or other labels like choice, pro-choice, women’s reproductive health, women’s reproductive rights, etc. It’s a superficially positive label.

These euphemisms stick in your mind, change your subconscious mind, and eventually become automatic. Oh, we don’t need immigrants? You must be a bigot. You must be a racist. Want to protect your borders? Oh, you’re against abortion so you must hate women, right? Even though so many women, probably the majority of women, are pro-life.

So my idea is, of course, the challenge of making such an unpleasant topic interesting is to pursue these labels, pursue these pre-established, very integrated ideas, and try to deconstruct them. It was to be. And of course, what is the ultimate evil today? Taken for granted: Nazism and Hitler.

And it’s so automatic. I begin my routine, and this may be a bit of a spoiler, but the routine is a contrast between what the Nazis did to undesirable people, including unborn children, and what the so-called Karens did to unborn children. Or start with a comparison. Of course the audience has to decide, but I was able to do the best I could.

The two forces of evil are diametrically opposed, yet one is perceived as evil. Because they were eliminating a fetus that was supposed to be defective and a burden, and they were at war. And here’s the interesting thing. They say they had their own legitimacy. What is your justification? This absurdity is very impressive, and I think that’s what makes this work so interesting.

And that’s what gives people hope. Because at the end of the day, whether it’s satire or political satire, it’s all about pointing out absurdities and pointing out contradictions, right?

In stand-up comedy, we’ve all heard of the concept of punch-ups and punch-downs. They tell me not to hit them. We shouldn’t go after poor immigrants, or poor oppressed Muslims, or poor women. You shouldn’t joke about it. We should speak the truth to those in power, and we should stick to that truth to people as well, and we should defend the defenseless. So, if not a fetus being targeted by its own mother, then who is the most defenseless creature?

Alignment: So what is “the West”? What does that word mean to you? What is the West? What does it symbolize?

Descente: Well, for me, being born in the West, the West was an ideal to reach, but since my father was a career diplomat, he took me away from me when I was a teenager at the worst possible time, and I always had a hard time achieving that. . I’m back, I did.

And like many Westerners from outside the Western world, I was very disappointed and disappointed to see that the West no longer had the will or confidence to physically protect themselves. Europe borders at the same time, but it also borders spiritually in terms of values.

So it was very disheartening to come back and see all the things in the West that I fought so hard to get back, and then being accused of trying to export to the poor in World War III. , very alarming and perplexing. It is actually being dismantled in stages.

We are subject to aggression, physical aggression because the numbers speak for themselves, and moral aggression. We have abandoned Christianity, abandoned traditional values, and abandoned family values for consumerism and corporatism. Look at how popular communism and Marxism are in our universities. I don’t know where to start.

It’s just a huge tragedy. And the World Economic Forum tells us to eat bugs, stop traveling, and give up our privacy. They have made us into atomized, stateless, borderless, faithless, godless, genderless, gender-fluid beiges who just watch Netflix and buy on Amazon. I just want people to change. Because, in the words of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, it will make it easier for us to act. Control. That is why everything has become the identity of a social construct. The country has no meaning. “Imagine if the country didn’t exist.” They love this song, yeah, and they don’t want God.

They just want to control us. Great Reset, Net Zero, Great Replace, etc. This was the worst situation I found myself in, and I thought becoming a journalist would help, but then I realized that legacy media is just lagging behind globalism.

I wasn’t feeling well about that, so I thought I might try comedy. I believe this is our last, or at least one of our last trenches. Because even though this region, like most other areas of our culture, is dominated by the left, comedy still has room to push the boundaries and experiment. to raise your voice.

Alignment:What do you predict for the future of comedy? Best case and worst case.

Descente: Well, let’s start with the worst case. The worst case scenario is a long march of left-wing infiltration into the organization, which was actually theorized by this Italian communist, and in fact, by Antonio, in the Italian city of Bologna, where I graduated. Via Gramsci is named after him. It is home to the Italian Communist Party, the largest in the Western world.

The left’s long march into our organization will continue. They corrupted college campuses, mainstream media, the judiciary, Hollywood TV commercials, and of course comedy. And their current plan is to bring in tens of millions of people from outside, either through the Mexican border or through the Mediterranean Sea.

Then give them amnesty and hopefully all of them will become left-wing voters. Understood. In other words, it is the worst-case scenario in which we are doomed to no rescue. Population decline has already passed, including the point of no return.

And the best case scenario, which I hope of course will be, is that there will be an awakening. Partly it’s because of new technology, but if you’re talking to me, Blaze Media and similar media exist and people have watched my pro-life routine millions of times. , because it’s not through legacy media. By the way, that’s also why they are chasing these platforms, but with the help of technology, people are getting smarter. People are waking up. Farmers are demonstrating and protesting. And as we speak in Berlin, they did this in the Netherlands as well. There was a truck driver in Canada.

Italy has the traditionalist prime minister I quoted earlier. In the UK we had Brexit. In the United States, Mr. Trump is aiming for his third victory in the presidential election.

So people wake up and say to the globalists: “Wait a minute, we love our country.” We don’t want to be replaced demographically, we want our values, our families, our cultural and genetic assets and characteristics, He is not a bigot because he firmly adheres to Western civilization, which gave liberalism to the world in its noble sense. It has lifted tens of millions of people out of poverty, if not more. And these human rights that they are using against us, who wrote it? White, pale, old Christians, they gave the world human rights, and now they’re using it against us.
