Georgetown coach Ed Cooley claps back at heckler amid latest Hoyas loss

Ed Cooley’s first season on the baseline for Georgetown men’s basketball didn’t go as planned. The Hoyas lost 70-76 to Seton Hall on Wednesday, dropping their record to 8-14.

Cooley spent the past 12 seasons at Providence before transferring to Georgetown. Cooley led the Friars to seven March Madness Tournament appearances during his tenure.

Cooley has managed to lead the Hoyas to a 5-2 start to the season, but Georgetown has struggled mightily against Big East Conference opponents.

A heckler targeted Cooley during a recent Hoyas game inside the Prudential Center in New Jersey. Unidentified fans highlighted Cooley’s estimated multi-million dollar salary.

“That’s $7 million per win,” someone in the student section yelled, according to the Asbury Park Press. The comment was clearly in reference to the Hoyas’ 1-10 record in the Big East.

The first-year coach decided to give a short profanity-laced response to the heckler. “You know, I’m rich as a mother. I’m rich as a mother,” Cooley said shortly after Georgetown’s seven-game losing streak.

Terms of Cooley’s deal with Georgetown were not disclosed. However, previous reports said the university had to offer Cooley a large sum of money to entice him to leave Providence.

Last month, Cooley returned to Rhode Island, but Providence fans did not give him a warm welcome. Just before the game started, fans inside the arena began chanting vulgar “F— Ed Cooley”.
