Hornets’ Kyle Lowry agrees to buyout, reaches $2.8M deal with 76ers

The veteran guard who won an NBA championship is leaving for the Knicks’ Eastern Conference rival.

Charlotte Hornets guard Kyle Lowry, who was one of the leaders of the Toronto Raptors’ NBA title-winning team, agreed to a contract buyout on Saturday night, putting him on track to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers for the remainder of the season. It was opened. According to ESPN.

The six-time All-Star guard will reportedly sign a $2.8 million contract with the Sixers if he clears waivers in the coming days.

The 37-year-old veteran, a graduate of Cardinal Dougherty High School and Villanova University, had long wanted to play for his hometown 76ers.

As an added bonus for Lowry, he will be reunited with Nick Nurse, who he coached in Toronto when the two teamed up to win the NBA title in 2019.

The 76ers, who also acquired guard Buddy Hield before the NBA trade deadline, will help Lowry maintain his playoff run until MVP center Joel Embiid, who will be out for several weeks after undergoing left knee surgery, eventually returns. I hope you will.

The 76ers, who defeated the Wizards 119-113 on Saturday, are 31-21 and are the No. 5 seed in the Eastern Conference, 1¹/₂ games behind the high-flying Knicks, who lost to the Pacers.

Lowry, who was with the Miami Heat at the beginning of the season, only spent a short time with the Hornets.

He landed with Charlotte from Miami last month as part of the Terry Rozier trade, and both Charlotte and Lowry agreed to keep him out until after the trade deadline.

Prior to his buyout with the Hornets, he had $10.6 million remaining on his $29.7 million contract from 2023-2024.
