The referees were quick to admit Monday night that they messed up the Knicks with an incorrect call.
In the final minutes of the Knicks’ 105-103 loss to the Rockets in Houston, Jalen Brunson contested Aaron Holiday’s 3-point shot and was called for a foul by referee Jasyn Goble.
The score was tied at this point, but Holiday made three free throws and made two of them to seal the victory for Houston.
Crew chief Ed Malloy stated after the game that the foul call was a mistake.
After confirming that in the postgame review, the offensive players were able to return to their normal playing positions on the floor,” Malloy told Pool Reporter. “Therefore, the contact that occurred after the ball was released was incidental to the shot attempt, was minor, and should not have been called.”
Holliday went on a frantic one-handed rant, but Brunson jumped out to fight him and made light contact as he jumped down.
Regarding the reason for the foul, Malloy said, “In the live action, contact with the lower body felt like illegal contact.”
Knicks winger Josh Hart shared his feelings shortly after Malloy’s hospitalization surfaced.

Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau was a bit tight-lipped about the fouls, but called for more consistency.
“The umpires’ opinion — and this is what I generally feel — is that they don’t really care how close the game is,” Thibodeau said after the loss. “You can call it tight, you can call it loose, but I want the consistency to be the same. They have a job. They have to control and manage the game. They have to use their own judgment because that’s their first responsibility, and I respect that.
