White House labels Suozzi win ‘devastating repudiation’ of congressional Republicans

The White House on Wednesday declared victory in the New York special election won by former Rep. Tom Suozzi, a Democrat, calling it a “devastating repudiation” of Republicans in Congress.

White House press secretary Andrew Bates sought to directly link Suozzi’s victory in New York’s 3rd Congressional District to Republican opposition to the bipartisan border security bill being developed in the Senate.

President Biden said he would remind voters every day that they are responsible for the problems at the southern border after the deal collapsed amid opposition from former President Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers.

“Yesterday, voters proved him right with a devastating rejection of Congressional Republicans,” Bates said in a statement. “Tom Suozzi has put support for bipartisan border legislation and Congressional Republicans killing it for politics at the forefront of his case. The results are unmistakable. .”

Bates opposed the national security supplement bill that overwhelmingly passed the Senate this week, which includes funding for Ukraine, Israel and Indo-Pacific allies, and said House Republicans are once again “putting politics before national security.” “There is,” he accused. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) said he has no intention of bringing the Senate bill to a vote in the House.

“As I’ve said before, the American people see through that Congressional Republicans are putting their personal politics above the security of our country. It’s time for the Speaker to allow a vote.” Bates said.
