former member of parliament Tom Suozzi (D.N.Y.) regained his old seat in the House of Representatives on Tuesday in a special election to replace the former congressman. George Santos(RN.Y.)
Why is this important to Congress?
: This would reduce the House Republican majority by one member, which was already short of a majority. If Suozzi takes office, Republicans will control the House by a 219-213 margin with three vacant seats. That means only two Republicans can leave the party on a specific partisan vote. 😅
What you need to know about Suozzi — The SALT dude is back:Suozzi served in the Legislature for six years before resigning after failing in the gubernatorial race. He positions himself as a moderate who works with the Republican Party. One of Mr. Suozzi’s policy priorities is to eliminate the cap on state and local tax (SALT) deductions to reduce the cost of living.
Do you have any tips for November? : hill jared gans
“This race was seen as a key bellwether heading into the November general election, as New York state is key to Democrats’ strategy to regain the House majority.” The 3rd Congressional District is one of five districts in the state that voted for Biden in 2020 but will elect a Republican in 2022. ” (the hill)

House Republican impeached secretary of homeland security Alejandro Mayorkas
Tuesday’s vote was a close 214-213.
this is important
: Mayorkas is the first Cabinet member to be impeached since the 1870s.
Does this mean he will be removed from office?: no! The articles of impeachment are expected to move to the Democratic-led Senate, where no articles of impeachment are expected to be introduced. Impeachment is widely considered to be a partisan move.
This vote failed last week. What has changed?
: House Majority Leader Steve Scalise(R-Louisiana) was able to return to the House and vote. He was absent last week due to cancer treatment.
