Kansas City radio DJ killed after Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade

A beloved radio disc jockey and die-hard Kansas City Chiefs fan was killed Wednesday when gunshots rang out, ruining the NFL team’s victory celebration that ended with at least 22 people injured.

Community radio station KKFI said in a Facebook post that DJ Lisa López Galván’s life was taken due to a “stupid act.”

“It is with deep sadness and a very heavy heart that we announce the loss of KKFI DJ Lisa Lopez, host of ‘Taste of Tejano,’ today in a shooting at a KC Chiefs rally. Let our community know,” the post said. . “Our hearts and prayers are with her family. We encourage anyone who may have seen her to contact police at 816-234-5111.”

“This foolish act robbed her family and this KC community of a beautiful person,” the post continued.

Lopez Galván, a mother of two, was confirmed dead in a shooting after the parade at Kansas City’s Union Station, the Kansas City Star reported. Officials confirmed one death at a news conference, but did not mention Galvan by name.

Friends confirmed to newspapers that López-Galván had died. She reportedly died from a gunshot wound sustained in her abdomen during surgery at her hospital.

“She was the most amazing, beautiful person,” said Lisa Lopez, a friend of hers for decades (no relation) and newsroom executive director at The Star. “She was a local DJ. She did everyone’s weddings. We all know her. She was so full of life.”

López-Galván, known as KKFI’s “Lisa G,” was a former disc jockey and co-host of “Taste of Tejano,” a show featuring Hispanic music, the newspaper said. Beto Lopez, president and CEO of Guadalupe Center, is her younger brother.

Lopez-Galvan was in her mid-40s and lived in suburban Shawnee with her husband and two children. Her personal Facebook page includes multiple posts and images supporting the Chiefs, who won the Super Bowl for the second consecutive year on Sunday.

The names of the other victims of the shooting have not been released. Officials said the gunshots occurred around 2 p.m. local time near a parking lot at Union Station, and more than 800 police officers were at the scene. Of the 22 victims, 11 were children and are expected to recover. At least one weapon was also recovered by police.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas added that all Chiefs players, staff and their families are safe and sound.

“The celebration was ruined by the shooting. This is an absolute tragedy,” Lucas said.

In a statement, President Biden called on lawmakers to strengthen gun control measures.

“It’s time to take action. That’s my position,” he said. “And I ask the nation to join me in making your voices heard in Congress and finally banning assault weapons, limiting high-capacity magazines, and strengthening background checks. , to take action to keep guns out of the hands of people who have no use for owning or handling them. ”

Wednesday’s rally was the latest to be destroyed by violence. Last year, several people were injured in a shooting in downtown Denver after the Nuggets won the NBA championship, and last year, a shooting occurred in a parking lot near the Texas Rangers’ World Series championship parade.
