Alleged Kansas City shooter was ‘fighting the whole time’

One of the gunmen who allegedly opened fire during the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade on Wednesday “kept fighting” as he was tackled and subdued by football fans, a heroic witness said.

Paul Contreras pushed the alleged assailant before law enforcement intervened. Tell CNN The gunman was preparing to spar, only to react to the horrific gunfight that unfolded in front of him, leaving one man dead and 22 injured.

“He came at me, so I got the right angle on him and hit him from behind. And when I hit him from behind, I shook the gun out of his hand or sleeve. Because as I was getting him to the ground, I saw the gun on the ground,” Contreras recalled.

Contreras said he and another good Samaritan put their weight on top of the alleged gunman and tried to subdue him as he tried to flee.

“We were fighting each other. He was trying to stand up while I was holding him down. Then another person helped me up. And for what seemed like a long time… But it was probably 15 or 30 seconds,” Contreras recalled.

“He’s just fighting to get back on his feet,” he said. “But we’re fighting to keep him down. Just because he had one gun, we didn’t want him to wake up and run away. Maybe he was wearing that big, bulky jacket. There may be some.”

Trey Filter, a resident of Witchita, Kansas, told NewsNation’s Chris Cuomo that he heard people yelling for the suspect to be tackled.

“I turned around and I saw a flash of light and I said to myself, ‘I hope that’s him.’ There was nothing, really. I didn’t see him coming,” he said. “All I remember is I barely saw the guy. And I couldn’t believe I caught him. And I just thought, ‘Oh, that’s him. I hope so.” I was thinking. Because there was too much going on.
