Tiger Woods hits brutal shank in return to PGA Tour: ‘Been a while’

Tiger Woods proved he was a human being with a shot that everyone has hit over and over again on the golf course.

Woods returned to competitive golf Thursday when he competed in the Genesis Invitational at Riviera.

The 15-time major champion had five birdies on the day and shot a 1-over 72. However, he hit a disastrous shot on the 18th and was unable to shoot even par.

After hitting his drive down the fairway, Woods had about 180 yards remaining. In other words, he was hitting an iron shot that he has hit about a billion times before.

But this one stands out from the rest for all the wrong reasons.

Woods hit a dead shank and quickly realized it was ugly. Woods let go of the club before completing his swing, causing it to fall back.

The ball went just 71 yards into the woods.

Woods recovered and hit the green on his third shot, but two putts resulted in bogey.

After the round, a reporter said Woods told the media, “I won’t say a word,” but Woods said it himself.

“Oh, sure. I shank it,” he said. Smiling.

Woods said his back “popped” during the final hole, resulting in a shank.

“I came down and it didn’t move,” he said.

Woods was then asked when was the last time he hit a shot, but he couldn’t remember.

“It’s been a while. It’s definitely been a while,” he said. “Other than trying to hit flop shots and other weird shots around the green instead of from where I was.”
