Steve McMichael admitted to ICU one week after Hall of Fame election

Bears legend and Super Bowl champion Steve McMichael was admitted to the ICU on Thursday to battle a urinary tract infection, his family announced in a statement.

According to Chicago’s ABC 7McMichael was admitted to Silver Cross Hospital in suburban Chicago with a fever.

The former defensive tackle, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2021, was hospitalized with sepsis and pneumonia last summer.

“Steve has been battling a urinary tract infection,” the family wrote Thursday. “He is on three different antibiotics and he will be admitted to the ICU tonight. We hope you will continue to pray for Steve’s speedy recovery. Thank you!”

McMichael’s latest health issues come just one week after the Chicago great was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Surrounded by family and former Bears teammates, McMichael learned he was part of this year’s class at his home in suburban Chicago.

“I know this means a lot to Steve and his family, and to all Bears fans and his teammates,” former Bears guard Gary Fencik said. According to the team’s website.

McMichael, 66, spent 13 of his 15 NFL seasons with the Bears, making two Pro Bowl appearances and being named All-Pro twice.

He played a key role in Chicago’s vaunted defense in 1985, recording eight sacks and 44 tackles en route to Chicago’s first and only Super Bowl victory.

Three years later, McMichael had a career-high 11.5 sacks and 88 tackles.

His 92.5 sacks with the Bears rank second in franchise history, and his 814 solo tackles rank third.
