Ancient ‘Christ Tattoo’ Discovered on 1,300-Year-Old Body Near Sudan Monastery

Scientists in Sudan have discovered a 1,300-year-old body with Christian tattoos referencing the Bible near an ancient monastery.

The discovery was made by Kari A. Guilbeau of Purdue University, who examined the remains in the laboratory of the Center for Polish Mediterranean Archeology at the University of Warsaw. The body was discovered in a burial ground near a medieval monastery in Sudan, and was examined by bioarchaeology researchers examining remains found at the site.

The man’s tattoo on his right foot features a Christogram and the Greek letters “Alpha” and “Omega”. The Christogram is a Christian symbol that is “combined with the Greek letters ‘chi’ and ‘rho’ to form an abbreviation for the monogram representing the name of Christ,” the news release states. . The letters “Alpha” and “Omega” are clearly Revelation 22:12-13Here Jesus says: My reward is with Me, and I will give it to each person according to his deeds. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. ”

Scientists believe the person was male. The tattoo was discovered while the body was being photographed.

“When I was working on the Ghazali collection, something that looked like a tattoo suddenly appeared and I was very surprised,” Guilbaud said. “We weren’t sure at first, but once the image was processed and the tattoo was clearly visible, the initial uncertainty was removed.”

a news release called it “an unusual medieval religious tattoo.”

This medieval monastery site is located in Ghazali, in the Wadi Abu Dom region of the Bayuda Desert in northern Sudan.

The researchers said: live science The person was not buried with the monks, but in a separate cemetery. Therefore, the person may not have been a monk, but someone who lived nearby. Although the remains were discovered in 2016, the tattoos “have only recently been revealed through additional post-excavation analysis and full-spectrum photography,” researchers told Live Science.

christian apologetics website pattern of evidence “It’s amazing that this man’s foot tattoo remained for more than 1,000 years, but due to Sudan’s arid environment, many of the remains at Ghazali cemetery were naturally mummified,” he said.

“This discovery highlights the widespread influence of Christianity in the first few centuries,” Patterns of Evidence said.
