Police Find Body in Charred Remains of Burnt Swedish Water Park

STOCKHOLM (AP) – A human body has been found among the charred remains of a water park under construction at one of Sweden’s largest amusement centers, police said Friday.

A huge fire on Monday destroyed much of the Oceana waterpark in Sweden’s second-largest city, Gothenburg, which was due to open this summer. Police said officers were able to enter the scene on Friday, where they found a body, which has not been identified.

A fire at the popular Liseberg amusement park spread to several waterslides and the water park’s pool area. Nearby hotels and office facilities had to be evacuated. One person is reported missing and 16 others have sustained minor injuries as a result of the fire.

Firefighters said the fire was under control on Tuesday, but they were unable to access parts of the area due to the risk of collapse. They said Friday that work is currently “in its final stages.”

Oceana was to include approximately 6,000 square meters (7,176 square yards) of indoor swimming facilities and 4,000 square meters (4,780 square yards) of outdoor swimming facilities. The venue was expected to accommodate up to 1,750 visitors at one time.

Opened in 1923, Liseberg is a popular tourist destination visited by around 3 million people a year.
