PORT STREET LUCIE — The Mets appear to have a new entry in their DH composition.
Choi Ji-man agreed to a one-year split contract with the club worth a total of $3.5 million. Reported by Yonhap News reporter Yoo Ji-ho.and cited the player’s agent as the source of information.
Choi also updated his Instagram On Friday, he reflected on joining the Mets.
Choi, a left-handed hitter, appeared in 39 games with the Pirates and Padres last season, hitting .163/.239/.385 with six home runs and 13 RBIs.
He could compete in spring training with left-handed hitter DJ Stewart, who will compete for DH time.
The Mets have Mark Vientos as a DH option on the right side.
Choi, 32, had his best season with the Rays in 2019, hitting 19 home runs in 127 games and posting an .822 OPS.
Choi, who also played for the Yankees the year before, worked in Milwaukee, where David Stearns led the front office.
Stearns is currently the Mets’ director of baseball operations.
