Islanders’ special teams look improved even in loss to Seattle

Tuesday’s 2-1 loss to the Kraken was a memorable one for the Islanders. But they hope it was the start of something for both special teams.

The Isles had a perfect night in the shootout for the first time in six games, going 4-for-3 in overtime before losing the shootout. And they scored their only goal on the power play. This is one of only five attempts he’s made at 5-for-4 in his past 33 attempts.

“our [penalty-kill] The structure was good,” Patrick Roy said after Saturday’s practice. “The catalyst that allowed most of our goals was our forecheck. That can definitely be fixed, so I think we can build around that. I believe we can build around that.”

The Rangers will boast a top-five power play and penalty kill unit when they return to play Sunday after a four-day break, and the Islanders will be immediately tested. For most of the year, the Islanders have been able to at least balance out their struggling penalties to some degree with a strong power play, but the latter has taken a turn for the worse over the past month.

They hope Kyle Palmieri’s goal from the crease on Tuesday is the start of fixing that.

“I believe that 1-3-1 is better.” [setup]But at some point, the 1-3-1 becomes a little static,” Roy said earlier this week. “We want to be more moved, we want more action. So give and go, walk in, walk out, slide to the back door. But it’s a different mindset and takes a little longer. But I thought [Tuesday] We ran it pretty well.

“Can I move more? It also depends on what kind of penalty you are playing against. A stationary penalty makes it easier to move. A very aggressive penalty makes it even harder. We’ll go into the hall. So we’ll move some more. But hey, we’re getting there.”

Mathew Barzal missed two practices earlier this week, but played the full game for the second straight day Saturday. He told the Post he feels good heading into Sunday’s game.

Roy continued to describe Hudson-Fassing as routine and declined to say whether he would be available for the game against Rangers.

Ilya Sorokin, who suffered his 10th loss of the season in overtime or penalties against Seattle on Tuesday, set a new Islanders club record, breaking Rick DiPietro’s mark of nine losses in 2006-07.
