Jordan Spieth offers crucial reminder to Hideki Matsuyama after Genesis victory

Hideki Matsuyama put on a show at Riviera in the final round of the Genesis Invitational, shooting a 62 to take the win over Will Zalatoris and Luke List.

Matsuyama finished the tournament with a total of 17 under par. He started the final round with three consecutive birdies and earned six pars through nine holes. He got off to a strong start with three birdies on the back nine and finished with three more birdies.

It was a great opportunity for the 2021 Masters champion to earn his ninth PGA Tour victory, and his first in a Tour event since the 2022 Sony Open.

Jordan Spieth gave Matsuyama some pretty good memories at X, drawing on his experience at Riviera earlier in the tournament.

“Hideki played great! Please check the scorecard again…” Spieth wrote.

Spieth signed the wrong score and was disqualified from the tournament. In the second round, he bogeyed the par-3 fourth hole on the Southern California course, but it was recorded as par.

The 29-year-old shot a 2-over 73 on the day, but not a 72 as written on the card, giving him a tournament total of 3 under. Spieth shot a 66 in the first round, putting him in good position.

Typically, someone with whom a golfer is paired, or a “marker,” records that golfer’s score.

The USGA and R&A define a marker as “a person responsible for entering a player’s scores on a player’s scorecard and certifying that scorecard.” This rule also states that the marker “may” be the player, which is almost always the case.

It is the golfer’s responsibility to ensure the score is correct. Spieth was paired with Patrick Cantlay and Tom Kim, who were at 13 under par at the time and had a five-stroke lead. Spieth and Cantlay have competed together in numerous Ryder Cups and Presidents Cups as U.S. teammates.

Spieth was 10 strokes behind Cantlay at the time of his disqualification, but was well within the 1-over cut line.

“Today I signed the wrong scorecard and walked out of the scoring area after I thought I had taken all the steps to make sure it was correct. Rules are rules and all The responsibility is mine. I love this tournament and the golf course so much.” “Like everyone at @PGATOUR, it hurts not to be able to run this weekend. I really appreciate the support in LA.” wrote to X.
