Research shows that marriage rates in the United States have declined by 60% over the past 50 years. This may be due to a number of factors, including decreased social pressure to marry, the glorification of individualism and independence, and a decreased desire to have children.
But perhaps most of all, the reason why more and more people are choosing to be single may simply be because marriage is difficult.
Jordan Peterson said it best when he explained what it means to “give it your all.” The phrase “I’ll give it my all” is a cliché and easily associated with wedding vows, but the sentiment of this proverb holds a beautiful but dark truth.
“The marriage vow is basically this: No matter what you say to me, I won’t run away. And it’s a hell of a vow, because when a person reveals all of their heart, Because you’re going to reveal yourself all the way to hell. It’s not fun. It’s terrible,” Peterson said.
“This is a totally radical counterculture,” Isabel Brown tells Dave Rubin. “Every column in Cosmopolitan or Teen Vogue, every influencer video, every podcast…everything is about what I want, what makes me happy, what meets my needs, what It’s about what gives me strength and what liberates me.”
“Yet, a truly healthy, beautiful relationship is never about you. It’s like you’re not the main character. You have to be willing to die to yourself in order to put your partner’s needs, wants, and desires first.” And I think that’s a really, really powerful thing,” Brown continues.
“We have to show our wives and husbands some of the dirt that’s out there and show them how together we can clean it up and make something better,” agreed Dave, a big fan of Peterson. Masu.
