President Joe Biden reportedly plans to put the brakes on mandating electric vehicles (EVs) for Americans just months before the 2024 presidential election.
In 2023, the Biden administration issued regulations requiring U.S. automakers to make nearly seven out of 10 new cars sold in the U.S. electric rather than gasoline-powered by 2032. This regulation would effectively force American consumers to purchase EVs.
Facing deep unpopularity, Biden is now trying to slow down the pace of EV mandates, although not actually taking them off the books completely. according to to new york times:
In a concession to automakers and unions, the Biden administration intends to ease factors. Limiting tailpipe emissions is one of the most ambitious strategies to combat climate change. Instead of essentially mandating automakers to rapidly expand sales of electric vehicles over the next few years, the administration would give automakers more time. The slowdown in Biden’s EV mandate comes as United Auto Workers (UAW) President Sean Fein said that “working class people are hurting” under the Biden administration and that the majority of U.S. autoworkers are under Donald Trump. It would happen right after he supported the president’s re-election while admitting he would vote for the former president. Trump instead.

Similarly, despite Tesla CEO Elon Musk saying that without tariffs China would “destroy” the U.S. auto industry with cheap EVs, Biden has vowed to fight against the proposed tariffs.
January poll show Most voters in battleground states oppose Biden’s EV mandate for the auto industry and consumers.
For example, 61% of Arizona voters, 87% of Michigan voters, 57% of Pennsylvania voters, 66% of Ohio voters, 61% of Nevada voters, and 64% of Wisconsin voters , responded that they do not support Biden’s EV mandate. Overall, 60 percent of voters nationwide oppose the mandate.
