British highways workers have rescued a lamb that had been stranded helplessly next to a fence on a busy motorway for two days.

A witness reported seeing the lamb stuck on the M1 motorway south of Watford Gap, Northamptonshire, England, according to a National Highways news release.

Retrieving the lamb proved difficult despite multiple patrols searching along the busy highway.

Officials said Traffic Police Officer Elliott Flynn “swapped into action” and found the stranded lamb on Monday, February 19th.

Flynn said the lamb was not shy and walked right up to him.

“As I walked away, the lamb came straight to me and started hugging my leg, so I was able to pick it up and take it to safety,” he said. . “The people in the stopped traffic were clapping and cheering when they saw what I was doing.”

The officers took the stray lamb to a nearby military post and fed it.

“The lamb had been there for at least two days and was tired and hungry, so we took it to nearby Watford Gap Station and gave it warm milk,” Flynn said.

Mr Flynn, who grew up on a farm, said he took the baby to a nearby field with a flock of sheep because he knew the number on the lamb’s tag matched the number on its mother.

“The mother was there with another newborn and as soon as she saw the lost lamb, she was licking it clean and Gappy started feeding it,” Flynn said. “We were so happy to reunite her with her mother.”
