Asteroid City (Wes Anderson, 2023)12:25pm, 9pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
It’s a tough category to win, but Asteroid City may be the most Wes Anderson movie ever. On the surface, this is a movie about contact with extraterrestrial life at a junior stargazer convention in the mid-century American Southwest. Except what we’re actually watching is a bunch of actors acting in a play about a junior stargazing contest. No, wait – what we’re actually watching is a TV documentary about the production of a play about the competition. Structurally gnarled, brazenly eccentric, and boasting perhaps the most impressive ensemble cast of this century, it may be difficult to keep the overall picture of Asteroid City in your head, but Wild It’s a great vehicle. stuart heritage
Mea Culpa (Tyler Perry, 2024), Netflix
Tyler Perry has maintained a level of productivity that most people would die for, directing 10 films and starring in eight more in the past decade alone, but Mea Culpa It looks like we’ve reached a new high. A “crazy, sexy thriller” in which a criminal lawyer played by Kelly Rowland embarks on a sexual adventure with a potential murderer hired to defend her. It’s a throwback to the erotic thrillers of the ’80s and his ’90s, but luckily it’s self-aware enough about its silliness to succeed. Case in point: Roland plays a woman named Mare. wonderful. S.H.
