NYC Duo Tried to Smuggle Fentanyl-Soaked Court Docs into Jail

Two suspected drug traffickers are facing nearly 50 charges for allegedly trying to smuggle court documents infused with fentanyl, cocaine and PCP into a prison, New York City officials said.

Braswell, also 37, is accused of delivering court papers soaked in liquid fentanyl, cocaine and PCP to Rikers Island inmate Kamagate while he was in Staten Island Superior Court.

Prosecutors said corrections agents became aware of the plan after listening to phone calls Kamagate made from Ryker and others in September and seized the documents tied together.

Police later learned that this was the pair’s third attempt. The pair are said to have attempted the same trick on at least two other occasions during Kamagate’s summer captivity.

“As the fentanyl crisis rages across our country, and here at home, we know all too well the lengths to which those involved in the drug trade will go to avoid detection. But this conspiracy is new. It was a horrible surprise,” McMahon said.

Mr. Camergate was sentenced to 21 criminal charges before returning to Rikers, while Mr. Braswell received 26 criminal charges and a $1 million bail.

Mr Kamagate could face up to 30 years in prison if convicted of the new charges, and the manslaughter case remains unresolved. If convicted, Braswell also faces up to 20 years in prison.
