Former President Trump said at an event in South Carolina that his four criminal charges increased his support among black Americans because they understood that he was a victim of discrimination. He said it’s because there are.
At a black tie event ahead of the South Carolina primary, Trump likened his legal predicament to the history of anti-Black racism in the justice system. Associated Press reported.
“I was charged with nothing, nothing,” Trump said at an event for black conservatives in the state. “And a lot of people said that’s why black people like me, because black people have been so hurt and discriminated against. In fact, they saw me as discriminated against. That was pretty cool, but maybe there’s something there.”
President Trump faces a tangle of legal troubles that will play out in court over the next year. He is currently defending himself against 91 criminal charges, including four state and federal indictments. He is also involved in more than six civil cases.
Trump, the Republican front-runner, has used court appearances to his advantage because many of the court proceedings coincide with key primary election deadlines.
Although he claims to be a victim of political persecution, there is no evidence that President Biden or his administration is behind the accusations against him, the Associated Press reported.
President Trump has been charged with engaging in an illegal conspiracy to overturn Georgia’s 2020 election results. He was also accused of engaging in multiple criminal conspiracies to maintain his power after losing the 2020 presidential election and pleaded guilty to four felonies.
In a separate lawsuit, he faces 40 charges for mishandling confidential records and attempting to obstruct government retrieval after leaving office. President Trump has been charged with falsifying business records in connection with hush money payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels over her alleged affair.
At Friday’s event, President Trump referenced a mugshot taken when he surrendered to authorities after being indicted on state extortion charges.
“When I took my mug shot in Atlanta, that mug shot was number one,” Trump said. “You know who accepted it more than anyone else? The black population.”
The news agency reported that Trump also said he knew many black people because several of his properties were built by black construction workers.
Trump is confident he can win more black votes than Biden in the next election. He predicts his stance on border issues could be helpful, since immigrants often end up in cities with large black populations. According to the Associated Press, he still faces an uphill battle because black voters overwhelmingly support Democrats.
