Long Island high school students are raising money to support inclusive initiatives and supporting sports activities for athletes with disabilities.
Lacrosse My Heart, a nonprofit led by six student lacrosse players from New York’s Roslyn High School, recently raised enough money to support the Long Island Hammerheads wheelchair lacrosse team.
“My friends, co-founders and I have been playing together since we were 5 years old, and lacrosse has given us so much, so through organizations like the Hammerheads and others who aren’t, “We wanted to connect and give back to our community. We want people to be exposed to lacrosse at a young age and show their love for the sport,” organization co-founder Zach Machar said on Saturday’s “Fox & Friends Weekend.” ” he said.
The nonprofit organization supports athletes like Joe Slaninka, a member of the Hammerheads team, and said community support makes all the difference.

“We’re a community-based program. There aren’t a lot of great fundraising opportunities for us, so organizations like Zach come to us and say, ‘We want to help you and do something.’ If you give it to me, that would be a big deal,” Slaninka said on “Fox & Friends Weekend.” -Host Rachel Campos Duffy.
“This also kind of shows that we play lacrosse. [and] They play lacrosse, so that’s what they have in common. ”
Lacrosse My Heart is “dedicated to making lacrosse accessible to people of all abilities” and “advocates for inclusiveness within the sport,” according to a site detailing the organization’s goals. They are raising funds and awareness to support the cause.
That includes providing wheelchairs for players with physical disabilities, similar to how they helped the Hammerheads.
“[These high schoolers] It really restored faith in America’s youth. [by taking] Thinking about this initiative[ing] About people other than ourselves, people who are in need…from lacrosse community to lacrosse community,” said Mike Nelson, president of the Long Island chapter of USA Lacrosse.
