A Knoxville, Tennessee, police recruit collapsed and died during routine physical training about a week before he was officially sworn in as a police officer, authorities announced Sunday.
Knoxville police said Wisbens Antoine, 32, collapsed after running a mile and a half Friday afternoon, but the cause was unclear.
When Antoine collapsed, department training staff immediately began CPR and other life-saving measures, including using a hand-held AED device, before Antoine was rushed to UT Medical Center.
Late on Friday night, Antoine remained in the hospital’s intensive care unit in a serious, life-threatening condition.

Officials said Antoine’s condition began to deteriorate late Saturday and early Sunday morning.
“Antoine passed away peacefully around 4 a.m. Sunday morning, surrounded by his family and loved ones,” police said in a statement.

Antwan, a member of the 2023-B Basic Recruit Class, joined the Knoxville Police Department as a Public Safety Recruit last year and began the Basic Recruit Academy on September 25th.

He was scheduled to be officially sworn in as a Knoxville Police Department officer on March 4th along with 18 of his classmates.
Antoine has a wife and two children.
