Sony cuts 900 jobs from PlayStation division in latest tech culling

Gaming company Sony announced Tuesday it would cut 900 jobs from its PlayStation division, becoming the latest tech giant to lay off some of its employees.

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) President and CEO Jim Ryan announced the dismissal A Tuesday email to PlayStation employees said the cuts amounted to 8% across the company’s locations around the world.

“After careful consideration and many months of leadership discussions, it became clear that changes needed to be made in order to continue to grow the business and advance the company,” Ryan said in an email. Ta. “We had to take a step back, look at our business holistically, and move forward with a focus on the long-term sustainability of our company and providing the best possible experience for our community. ”

“Our goal is to streamline our resources to ensure our continued success and deliver the experiences gamers and creators expect from us.”

Ryan said PlayStation’s London studio will be permanently closed, while affected U.S. employees will be notified on Tuesday.

Technology companies shed around 40,000 employees in the first two months of 2024 amid a massive shift to artificial intelligence. Cisco this month announced plans to lay off about 4,250 employees, PayPal announced 2,500 job cuts and Microsoft announced in late January that it would lay off about 1,900 people in its gaming division.
