Trans Virginia lawmaker storms out of chamber after being called ‘sir’ by Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears

A transgender lawmaker stormed out of the Virginia Senate chamber on Monday to protest Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears calling him “sir.”

Democratic Sen. Danica Roem is the first transgender person to serve in the Virginia House of Representatives, and although she is biologically male, she identifies as female. Rome asked questions about the bill during the plenary session Monday afternoon.

“Mrs. President, how many votes do we need to pass this bill with emergency provisions?” asked Rom.

Mr. Sears replied, “That would be four-fifths, Senator.”

“So what would that exact number be, Madam President?” Roem asked again.

“Yes, sir, that will be 32 years old,” said Iar Sears.

Rome was then heard putting down the microphone and leaving the chamber. That lawmaker did not vote in a subsequent roll call vote.

Sears apologized for the incident later in Congress, but did not specifically apologize for referring to Roem by the lawmaker’s biological sex.

“I pissed off Sen. Roem,” Sears said. “Let me tell you, I’m not here to offend anyone. I’m here to do the job that the people of Virginia have asked me to do, which is to respect everyone and… It’s about treating people with dignity, which I myself sometimes didn’t have the luxury of doing.”The same respect and dignity. ”
