Ben Affleck, George Clooney, Michael Keaton and more A-list actors who have played Batman on the big screen

Since Batman first appeared in comics in 1939, the masked superhero has achieved ultimate status in the television and film industry.

Over the years, many famous and acclaimed actors have appeared on screen as American heroes. Each new performance captivated the audience with a new interpretation of the caped crusader. However, some actors were more widely accepted and expected than others.

From animation to live-action, these 10 actors have played Bruce Wayne/Batman at some point in their careers.

1. Adam West

The late Adam West is known to many audiences as the first actor to play Batman, but other actors had played the role before him. He played the role of a superhero in his 1960s television show, Batman.

Before West, Lewis Wilson and Robert Lowery each played Batman in 15 episodes in the 1940s.

West first appeared as a voice actor in 1960, then returned to voice acting in various film projects.

2. Michael Keaton

Michael Keaton is respected as one of the best actors to have played Batman.

Although Keaton was well-received as his version of the caped crusader, he wasn’t a top choice among fans from the beginning of Jump.

Keaton played Batman in Beetlejuice. Due to his departure from horror/comedy, many were unsure of his performance in the new role.

The movie “Batman” directed by Tim Burton was a huge hit. Keaton first appeared as Batman in 1989, and returned in 1992 in Batman Returns. There was a third film in the series, in which Keaton did not continue.

However, Keaton returned to the big screen as Batman in 2023 in The Flash, starring Ben Affleck, Ezra Miller, and Michael Shannon.

3. Kevin Conroy

The late Kevin Conroy was best known as the “voice of Batman.”

He voiced the character on Batman: The Animated Series, which began in 1992, and has appeared on other films since, including Batman: Mask of the Phantasm and Batman: The Killing Joke. He went on to provide the voice of superheroes in many television shows, feature films, and video games. ”

4. Val Kilmer

Val Kilmer’s tenure as Batman was short but memorable. In 1995 he replaced Keaton in Batman Forever.

The film starred Hollywood’s elite, including Jim Carrey, who played the Riddler. Tommy Lee Jones as Two-Face and Nicole Kidman as Dr. Chase Meridian.

5. George Clooney

George Clooney’s performance as a superhero was not well received by critics.

Clooney played the role in the 1997 film Batman & Robin. Chris O’Donnell returns from Batman Forever, where he played Batman’s superhero sidekick Robin.

The film, starring Clooney, featured Hollywood stars such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Uma Thurman as villains, but many fans were not sold on it.

Critics cited a busy storyline and strange costumes as reasons for the film’s poor reviews.

6. Christian Bale

Christian Bale is one of the most famous actors to have played Batman over the years.

Bale played Batman in the popular “The Dark Knight” film series. All three movies were directed by Christopher Nolan.

Bale first appeared on screen as Batman in 2005’s Batman Begins. He reprized his role in The Dark Knight in 2008 and reprized the role in The Dark Knight Rises in 2012.

The trilogy got off to a strong start with “Batman Begins.” The film’s star-studded cast included Cillian Murphy, Michael Caine, Katie Holmes, Liam Neeson, Gary Oldman, and Morgan Freeman. The first film details Bruce Wayne’s transformation into Batman and his desire to protect Gotham City from the dangerous crimes that engulf it.

This first film paved the way for the 2008 film The Dark Knight, in which American actor Heath Ledger joined the cast as the Joker. Megastar Maggie Gyllenhaal also appeared in the film as Rachel, replacing Katie Holmes.

Ledger’s performance in the film made it a favorite of many fans. Ledger won an Academy Award for his role in the film, but died untimely before the film was released in January 2008. His family accepted the award on his behalf.

The third and final film in the series starred Anne Hathaway as Catwoman and marked Bale’s final appearance as the superhero.

7. Ben Affleck

In movies starring Ben Affleck as Batman, his starring time was shared with others in major superhero roles.

Affleck played Batman in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and 2017’s Justice League. Both films also featured many other superhero characters, including Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, and Jason Momoa as Superman. Written by Henry Cavill. Ezra Miller joined the cast in the role of The Flash in the 2017 film.

The actors, including Affleck, returned to heroic duties in 2021’s Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

Affleck also appeared as Batman in the 2023 film The Flash.

8. Will Arnett

Will Arnett provided the voice of Batman, especially in the Lego movie series.

Arnett voiced the character in both “The Lego Movie” and “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part.” The character got his own spin-off between the two films titled “The Lego Batman Movie.”

9. Robert Pattinson

Robert Pattinson first rose to fame as a vampire in Twilight, and went on to star in the 2022 film The Batman.

Pattinson’s approach to the role was particularly dark. In this movie, the characters were often angry and awkward. The film focused on Bruce Wayne/Batman’s skilled detection abilities.

With the 2022 film, Pattison becomes the latest actor to play the role in a live-action movie centered around the character.

10. Keanu Reeves

Audiences have seen Keanu Reeves’ fighting abilities on camera, mainly thanks to his starring role in the “Matrix” series. However, Reeves never had a chance to show off his Batman side.

The People’s Choice Award nominee voiced Batman in the 2022 animated film “DC League of Super Pets.”
