Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell will step down as Republican leader in November, the Kentucky Republican announced on the Senate floor Wednesday, marking the end of an era on Capitol Hill and a high-stakes battle over his successor. The race was about to begin.
McConnell, who turned 82 last week, said he is “closer to the end of my contribution than I would have liked.”
“When I was thinking about when to deliver the news to the Senate, I always envisioned a moment when I would have complete clarity and peace about the sunset of my work,” he said. “This was the moment I became convinced that I had contributed to preserving the ideals that I strongly believe in. That day has come today.”
Mr. McConnell has long been a prominent figure in Washington, D.C., and has made history throughout his political tenure.
He still plans to serve out his term.
The Associated Press reported:
McConnell said he intends to serve out his Senate term, which ends in January 2027, “albeit from a different seat in the chamber.” Aides said the announcement about Mr. McConnell’s leadership position was unrelated to his health. The Kentucky senator suffered a concussion in a fall last year, and there have been two public incidents where his face momentarily froze during his speeches.

The senator was under increasing pressure from opposition and sometimes hostile elements of his party, which have been staunchly aligned with President Trump. The two have been estranged since December 2020, when McConnell refused to abide by Trump’s lie that Democrat Joe Biden’s presidential election was the product of fraud.
