Ex-WNBA Player Sheryl Swoopes Insists ‘Black People Can’t Be Racists’

Former Women’s National Basketball Association star Sheryl Swoopes has criticized black people’s ability to be racist after she was called a racist for recent comments about college basketball star Caitlin Clark. They are fighting back by saying no.

Earlier this month, Ms. Swoopes, who is Black, attacked Caitlin Clark, a white college basketball star, saying that Clark did not deserve the praise she received for breaking women’s college basketball records.

Clark broke the NCAA women’s career scoring record on February 15, leading the University of Iowa to third place in women’s basketball this season.

Clark also broke one of Swoopes’ records after setting an NCAA Tournament record with 191 points in six games for the University of Iowa last year. Clark broke Swoopes’ 177 points at Texas Tech in 1993.

The college star’s success apparently led to sour grapes for Swoopes.

Swoopes tried to discredit Clark’s accomplishments, but her claims were full of false statistics and misinformation, and social media users blamed Clark just because the star college athlete is white. He accused her of disrespecting him.

The collegiate and former WNBA star blasted Clark in multiple social media posts, accusing him of cheating by using an extra year of eligibility and taking 40 shots per game. claimed to have done so. Swoopes wasn’t just wrong, he was very wrong. Not only did Clark not take an extra year, he averaged half as many shots per game as Swoopes claimed.

Unsurprisingly, Swoopes caused an uproar online, with many calling her a racist for attacking a white college star.

But now Swoopes is firing back, saying it’s impossible for a black person to be racist.

“For people to come up to me and say I made a comment like that because I’m a racist. First of all, black people shouldn’t be racist, but That’s the furthest thing from my mind,” Swoopes said on a recent episode of Gills Arena.

“I grew up in a very small, mostly white town in West Texas. My best childhood friends are white. I went to a predominantly white college. I won a national championship. [and] Almost everyone on the team was white. We are still sisters. It’s not part of my DNA,” she added.

Swoopes seems to be playing on the same trope that white people are always made fun of when they say they have black friends, so their comments can’t possibly be racist.
