A Florida juvenile detention center sergeant is currently in prison himself after allegedly writing more than a dozen inappropriate letters to a 16-year-old inmate.

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday that Sgt. Caitlin Gomez, 27, is charged with soliciting a child to commit sexual assault by a member of her family or someone who has custody of her.

Gomez was hired by the sheriff’s office on Jan. 5 and worked as a sergeant at the Pinellas Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Clearwater.

Gomez’s alleged relationship with a teenage inmate came to light after detectives responded to a call from the jail about about 10 inappropriate letters found in her bed.

While examining the letter, detectives learned it was written by Gomez.

“The letter clearly described what would occur during the first sexual encounter and the ongoing relationship that developed while the victim was incarcerated,” the sheriff’s office said. It added that a photo of Gomez was also found in the boy’s cell.

When questioned by detectives, Gomez admitted to writing the letter and said her relationship with the boy began to deepen when they met a few weeks ago, police said.

She had been assigned to a juvenile detention center for the past three weeks, the sheriff’s office said.

Gomez was instructed not to be alone with inmates, but facility staff told the sheriff’s office that Gomez was alone with the boy “on several occasions.”
