PORT STREET LUCIE — In his first major league spring training, Jett Williams is fitting right in with the Mets.
“When he’s not in the lineup, we’re making fun of him,” manager Carlos Mendoza said after the Mets’ 3-0 win over the Cardinals in the Grapefruit League on Wednesday. “It’s good that he has those relationships and he’s enjoying them.”
Williams said much of the banter started with bench coach John Gibbons wondering why the 20-year-old shortstop wasn’t starting.
Francisco Lindor, the team’s regular shortstop, is getting the most reps at the position.
Zach Short and Julio Iglesias also started at shortstop this spring.
Williams appreciates the clever ribbing.
“I was able to communicate well with Mendoza and the entire coaching staff,” Williams said. “I think it’s fine before you come.” [to the Mets]Because it means that when I get a chance to come here, I’m comfortable and I can bring my game. ”
Williams followed Lindor as shortstop that day, and showed off his speed by hitting a roller to third base in his only at-bat.

“I’ve always been taught that if you get a ground ball or a fly ball, just bust it out of the box,” Williams said. “Some people might get mad about hitting a ground ball and just jog, but I think that’s part of the game and you know there could be different outcomes. Let’s say it happens and it could be the difference in the game.”
Williams has yet to play center field this spring, but the Mets plan to evaluate him at that position.
Trayce Thompson hit a solo home run over the center field fence in the fifth inning, his second home run of the spring. The veteran outfielder hit a grand slam two days ago against the Nationals.
“He’s been working hard with our hitting coach,” Mendoza said. “He’s a player who’s made some adjustments. Being really direct to the ball is one of them. He’s… a special defender, his speed and his impact on the baseball. It’s good to see results early in camp.”
Edwin Diaz will likely pitch in minor league games before joining the Grapefruit League, but Mendoza said he does not know the schedule for each game.
Mendoza said Diaz, who took part in pitcher fielding practice for the first time this spring after Tuesday’s live batting practice, had no problems.
Diaz missed all of last season recovering from patellar tendon surgery on his right knee.
