DC Police respond to reports of an officer-involved shooting in Navy Yard

Washington, D.C., police are responding to reports of an officer-involved shooting in Southeast Washington.

The shooting was reported around 6 a.m. in the 400 block of M Street near the Navy Yard. According to FOX 5 DC.

The Metropolitan Police Department confirmed that a Housing Authority employee was shot and killed, and said officers were searching for the suspect.

The officer was shot in the torso around 5:45 a.m. ET while patrolling the Carroll Apartments on 410M Street Southeast in the Navy Yard neighborhood as part of a routine DCHA police patrol, according to the D.C. Housing Authority.

“The officer was transported to an area hospital. DCHA can confirm that the officer involved is in stable and alert condition,” the Housing Authority said.

Police urge residents to “shelter in place, stay inside your home, and make sure your doors are locked and secure. If you see or hear anything suspicious, call 911. Please,” he called out.

Police closed the road and asked residents to avoid the area while they investigated.

FOX News has reached out to the Metropolitan Police Department for additional comment.

The Washington, D.C. Housing Authority Police Force covers fixed security stations and patrols the city’s public housing developments. The department will be led by Michael Reese, a former Washington, D.C., police chief who served in the department for more than 30 years before retiring in 2015.

Reese was appointed police chief and housing authority director of public safety in January.

Thursday’s shooting marks the second time in four months that a housing authority officer has been injured in a shooting incident, The Washington Post reported.

In October, the newspaper reported that an off-duty housing worker was shot on New York Avenue in Northeast Washington.
