“I think it gives us a chance. …I want our conference to really think about what we’re aiming for. I suggested we develop a mission statement. ” he said.

“I come from a private sector background. I think it’s important to understand what an organization is trying to accomplish and set goals. And then hopefully a leader emerges from that process and leads that mission statement and conference. They’re going to commit to a much more collaborative process to do that. So this will take weeks, maybe months. I’m grateful that Leader McConnell has given us the time to do that. ,” Johnson said, pointing to several positive aspects of McConnell’s leadership.

“On a positive note, I think his greatest leadership moment was after the tragic death of Justice Scalia. He came right out and let the American people decide the direction of the court. I said, “Let’s do it.” It was the right decision, and I think it was very helpful in the 2016 election. And what ultimately led us to the conservative court was because the American people liked Donald Trump. “That was a great moment of leadership because Republicans had a Senate majority and they confirmed some conservative judges. So that was a great moment of leadership,” Johnson continued, noting that McConnell had a “very stellar track record” on the deficit. He pointed out that he did not have the track record he had described.

“He provided leadership with less than $10 trillion in our debt. Now it’s 35 trillion. And throughout that entire period, there was only one person who sat in on every debt, every student negotiation, every appropriation, every budget negotiation. was Mitch McConnell,” the senator explained.

Asked if he would step up as Senate majority leader, Johnson said: “I want to make sure that once again our conference can show the American people this is what we’re going to do, this is what we’re about. “We are trying to lead the process of developing a mission statement.” That’s what we’re trying to do. ”

“And I have already argued that life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, free markets by limiting government, and providing an effective counterweight to the policies and ideologies of the radical left are what we are all about. We’ve put forward some sort of mission statement to say, “We’re used to destroying this country,” Johnson said, emphasizing his efforts to “try to lead that process.”

listen:

“And in the process, hopefully the conference will identify and have leaders who recognize, ‘Yes, this is what we want to do, this is our mission statement, and you are the right person to lead this effort.’ I hope it shows up,” he said.

Host Mike Slater asked Johnson, “Would you accept this assignment if called upon?”

The senator didn’t completely rule out the prospect, telling Slater: That’s why I’m doing everything I can to save this country. ”

“I’m leading this process,” he said, adding that he believes Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) could be a good leader. “We’ll see how everything goes. Let’s take a look,” he added.

“I want to go through a very thoughtful process and force whoever the leaders elected at the conference are to embrace this mission statement, but also to implement a different, more collaborative way of operating. I want to force it,” he added.
