An Illinois judge has put on hold until Friday on appeal from his defense team, a ruling that ordered former President Donald Trump to be removed from the March 19 Illinois Republican presidential primary ballot.

Cook County Judge Tracy Porter issued the injunction hours after ruling that Trump should be disqualified from running for office based on the Constitution’s ban on “insurrection.” She immediately put the ruling on hold in anticipation of Trump’s appeal.

“In light of the nominee’s February 28, 2024 Notice of Appeal, this order provides that the appeal will be fully and finally resolved by the Illinois First District Court of Appeals, the Illinois Supreme Court, and/or the United States Supreme Court. The case shall be suspended until further notice,” the order states.

Porter’s ruling reversed a January decision by the Illinois State Board of Elections to keep Trump’s name on the primary ballot. Group of Illinois voters indicted A former president who started a rebellion. Removing his name from the ballot would suppress votes cast for Trump.

Porter made the decision in response to a group of voters calling for Trump’s removal over the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol.

“Every court and official that has discussed President Trump’s constitutional fitness has found that President Trump committed an insurrection after taking the oath of office, thus disqualifying him from office,” Speech for the People said. said Ron Fein, legal director for Liberty. Lead attorney in this case.

The Illinois lawsuit is among similar lawsuits seeking to exclude President Trump from primary voting in multiple states. Officials argue that Trump is not eligible because the 14th Amendment’s rarely used clause bars people “involved in insurrection” from holding public office.

“An activist Democratic judge in Illinois quickly overruled the state election board, contradicting previous decisions in dozens of other states and federal jurisdictions,” Trump campaign spokesman Stephen Chan said in a statement. This is an unconstitutional ruling and we will immediately appeal.”

Trump has not been charged with inciting an insurrection, but he faces election interference charges in Washington, D.C. and Georgia.
