Like the rest of the world, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was caught off guard by Shohei Ohtani’s sudden marriage revelation.
Hours after the Dodgers two-way superstar announced his marriage to a Japanese woman in a surprising Instagram post, Roberts said the team was “surprised and didn’t have much time to think about it.” He said the celebration may be delayed.
“I’m so happy for him and his bride,” Roberts said Thursday. “As for the wedding gift, I was so surprised that I didn’t have much time to think about it. I’m sure it’s on the way.”
Ohtani, 29, who has kept much of his private life private despite being an international superstar, revealed details about his union while at the Dodgers’ spring training facility in Arizona.
The two-time American League MVP said he and his wife had known each other for “about three or four years.” The Athletic reported Thursday, The Los Angeles Times points out that The couple got engaged last year and she “came to join him during training camp this spring,” he said.
Ohtani’s revelation comes days after he made his spring training debut with the Dodgers, who signed a monster 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers in December after spending six seasons with the Angels. .
A large portion of the deal – $680 million to be exact – will be deferred until the end of the contract as the Dodgers look to acquire a championship contender.
