Marty Walsh reaffirms commitment to NHLPA after USPS nomination

The headline in Friday’s Boston newspaper was that former Boston mayor Was ‘tipped off’ about returning to Biden administration.

This is quite interesting considering that a former Boston mayor named Marty Walsh has already taken a full-time job as the NHLPA’s executive director after being elected to run the union just 12 months ago. Ta.

Given the chaotic nature of this particular union’s leadership history (villains on the left, jokers on the right), questions immediately arose within the industry.

Was Walsh taking on other jobs in addition to his PA responsibilities? Will he split his time between missions? Will he campaign this summer?

It turns out the answer is no to all of the above. Mr. Walsh was nominated by the President to be the President of the United States Postal Service. If confirmed by the Senate, Walsh will become one of nine governors on the board, which includes the acting postmaster general and postmaster general, according to the USPS website.

“My number one priority, my only priority, is running the NHLPA,” Walsh told Slapshot on Saturday morning. “And I actually feel that this has given the PA a greater presence representing workers on this committee.

“This is a bipartisan committee that traditionally meets three to five times a year. It is not uncommon for union leaders or league commissioners to be members of the board. My Responsibilities to PA does not interfere in the slightest.

“I was asked to take office,” said Walsh, who served as Boston’s mayor from 2014 to 2021 and then resigned to accept a position in Biden’s Cabinet. “It’s hard to say no.”

Mr. Walsh engineered an agreement with the NHL and IIHF to return the league and its players to the business of international, best-on-best hockey, creating a calendar designed for games every other winter. He has been active in denouncing Arizona’s continued failures.

Walsh told Slapshot that the union has not yet reached a decision on whether to file a grievance challenging Chicago’s termination of Corey Perry’s contract and Arizona’s termination of Adam Ruzicka. Ta.

“Both are still under consideration,” Walsh said. “A meeting on this topic is scheduled.”

Walsh did not seek permission from the PA’s 32-member player representative board to take on the assignment with the USPS, but again, this isn’t exactly a secret, at least not many people know about it. It is reported that. situation. Our mission remains the same.

“When the campaign starts after Labor Day, that’s when we start and run fall tours with our teams,” Walsh said. “We will reach 30 by the end of December this year and our goal for next year is to reach all 32 within that period.

“That’s the campaign I’m going to be a part of.”

So when I met Nick Fotiu last week to get his take on Matt Lempe, he told me that his favorite match of his career was the one at Islanders Garden where he faced Mike Bossie. talked. No. 22 was on his way to setting a modern NHL record by scoring in 11 consecutive games.

The truth is, it wasn’t a game at the Garden, it was probably the most memorable regular season game of the series, the game at the Garden where Ulf Nilsson broke his ankle on a check by Denis Potvin.

It was February 25, 1979. Bossy was unable to score a goal or actually break the provisionally reset record. Rangers won the game.

Fotiu laughed and reminded me that this wasn’t the first time he’d faced Bossy on a potentially milestone night. A year ago, when Bossy arrived at the Garden with 49 goals and was looking to become the first rookie in NHL history to reach 50 goals, then-GM John Ferguson came up with the concept. It was March 25, 1978.

“Fergie told me I was going to cover Bossy, and the first thing I did was go to St. Patrick’s Cathedral, light a candle and say, ‘Don’t make fun of me tonight. ’ ” said Staten Island’s favorite son and me.

“I lined up next to Bossy and said, ‘If you touch the puck tonight, I’m going to take this stick and shove it up your ass. You’ll get your 50th goal somewhere else.’ It’s okay. I’m not going to score tonight.’

“You know what?” asked People’s Choice, who used to stuff pucks into blue seats at the end of warm-ups. “I scored a goal and an assist, but he couldn’t do anything.”

You might want to look into it. The Rangers won 5-1. Fotiu scored late in the first period, alongside Phil Esposito and Lucien DeBlois. Bossy had to wait one more game in which he scored two points to reach 53 points, but oh, how nice it would have been to answer the phone and hear Mike’s side of the story.

If Dawson Mercer is involved in trade talks with Calgary for Jacob Markstrom, I’m going to hang up the phone if I’m on New Jersey GM Tom Fitzgerald’s side.

So, for now, the challenge will be JT Miller, who forms the Canucks’ one-two punch in the middle, and Elias Pettersson, who signed an eight-year, $92.8 million contract extension with an AAV of $11.6 million each. He will face Edmonton’s dynamic duo of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Toronto has Auston Matthews and John Tavares.

Historically, nothing compares to the Oilers’ mid-’80s tag team match between Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier. And I’ll take Colorado’s tandem of Joe Sakic and Peter Forsberg in front of Detroit’s duo of Steve Yzerman and Sergei Fedorov.

Brian Trottier-Brent Sutter wasn’t too shabby either.

What’s more creepy this season from reigning champion Jordan Binnington or world No. 1 challenger Nick Cousins?

Finally, I don’t know why there is so much concern about the fact that the Jets have not been able to fill the building in Winnipeg. All they have to do is move into an arena the same size as the Coyotes and pack the barn every night.
