Legendary ESPN NFL Reporter Chris Mortensen Passes Away at 72

Chris Mortensen, the longtime ESPN NFL reporter, has died at the age of 72.

Like many of ESPN’s early movers and shakers, Mortensen rose through the ranks in sports media through newspapers. After a notable stint in atlanta journal constitution and sports news, Mortensen solidified his position at ESPN by breaking the NFL’s big stories and providing insight on studio shows.

Mortensen’s lucrative appearances on breaking news and studio shows continued unabated until 2016, when he announced that he had throat cancer and would no longer be able to make frequent network appearances.

“Mort was widely respected as an industry pioneer and widely loved as a supportive and hard-working teammate,” ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro said in a statement. “He covered the NFL with extraordinary skill and passion, and was at the top of his field for decades. He will be truly missed by his colleagues and fans, and our hearts and thoughts are with him. My thoughts are with his loved ones.”

Mortensen pioneered the role of cable sports breaking news reporter in many ways. As demand for breaking news grew, so did Mortensen’s contact list.

ESPN’s current lead NFL reporter Adam Schefter also shared his thoughts on his former colleague with X.

“It was a truly devastating day. Mort was one of the greatest reporters in the history of sports and an even greater person. My deepest condolences to his family and everyone who knew and loved him. So many did. Malt was the best. He will be forever missed and remembered.”
