A Queens prostitute who tried to learn how to cover up crimes through shows like “Dexter” was found guilty Monday of strangling and dismembering a sex worker, prosecutors announced.
Corey Martin, 36, was sentenced to life in prison after a federal jury found him guilty of a number of charges, including commission murder, in the April 2018 killing of Brandi Odom.
Prosecutors said the twisted crime was “motivated by greed” as Martin and co-conspirator Adele Anderson took out a life insurance policy on Odom, 26, leading to the gruesome murder.
At the time of the murders, Martin was living in a Rosedale home with Anderson and Odom and was recruiting both women for commercial sex work.
“For this horrific, cold-blooded crime, motivated by greed and carefully planned, it stands to reason that Martin will face a mandatory sentence of spending the rest of his life in prison,” said Breon, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York. Peace said. said in a statement.
Martin and Anderson purchased life insurance policies in Odom’s name in March and December 2017, paying up to the maximum premiums with Western Union money orders and debit cards in the victim’s name.
Mr Anderson said at Mr Martin’s trial that the pair had also been watching television programs in which they prepared to carry out twisted murders. She agreed to testify after receiving her plea deal in this case.
According to her testimony, the two watched the true crime show “The First 48,” which depicts police work, and talked about “things not to do and how to avoid getting caught by the police.” They were talking about it.
Martin also watched the show “Dexter,” about a serial killer who dismembers his victims, Anderson said, because “he was looking for a way to get rid of Brandi.”
Martin strangled Odom in her bedroom, then used an electric saw to dismember her body in the bathroom and covered her with heavy-duty black trash bags, Anderson testified.
He and Anderson then abandoned her body parts in Brooklyn’s Canarsie Park in the early morning hours of April 8 and 9, 2018, prosecutors said.
After the crime, Martin instructed Anderson to file a life insurance claim in Odom’s name, but the claim was unsuccessful, federal authorities said.
“Martin trafficked his victim for profit, killed her with his bare hands, and then discarded her brutally murdered body parts in order to profit from her death,” Peace said. Stated.
“Brandi Odom suffered an unthinkable death at the hands of this defendant, but her life mattered. We hope this judgment, which holds the defendant accountable, brings some closure to her family. ”
In addition to the murder-for-hire charge, Martin was also convicted of conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, aggravated identity theft and other charges.
His lawyer did not respond to a request for comment Monday.
Anderson previously pleaded guilty to murder, identity theft and wire fraud, a U.S. attorney’s office spokeswoman said. She has not yet been sentenced.
