Former New York Governor David Paterson (D), along with New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D), guarantees that the illegal alien accused of murdering Laken Riley of Georgia will not be turned over to immigration authorities. is opposed to the “sanctuary city” policy. and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials.
Jose Antonio Ibarra, 26, an illegal alien from Venezuela, arrived in New York City in September 2022 after being released into the U.S. interior from the southern border.
In mid-2023, Ybarra was arrested in New York City on charges of injuring a child and violating motor vehicle regulations. He was released from jail before ICE officials learned of Ybarra’s arrest.
Several months later, in February 2024, Ybarra allegedly kidnapped and murdered Riley on the University of Georgia campus in Athens.
Adams later said he wanted to amend Sanctuary City’s policy that prevents New York City officials from notifying ICE agents about Ybarra’s arrest.
Patterson, who served as governor from 2008 to 2010, said he supports Adams’ position against today’s sanctuary city policies.
“Earlier this week, Mayor Adams seemed to indicate that he was not going to fully embrace the idea of New York as a sanctuary city,” Patterson said. Said Local radio:
He feels that if someone is arrested and charged with a felony, we should be able to report it to ICEand perhaps the person may be deported. [Emphasis added]
As it stands, the city is not allowed to have that conversation with the federal government…We’re in a situation right now where we have close to 200,000 immigrants. Immigrants live in very crowded areas and private houses. Because they are being kicked out of immigrant shelters and many immigrants are being forced into crime. That’s the only way they can survive Some of them are criminals who have been here from the beginning. His views on immigration are better than anyone else talking about it. [Emphasis added]
Adams reiterated this month that he wants sanctuary city policies changed to allow the New York City Police Department (NYPD) to hand over criminally illegal aliens to ICE agents.
“As a former police officer, I continue to believe that since the days of Mayor Koch and Mayor Bloomberg, there has been clear guidance that those who commit serious crimes in our city should be able to be deported after serving their time in prison. “Adams” Said CNBC.
